Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana or Prime Minister's People Money Scheme) (PMJDY) is India's National Mission for Financial Inclusion. 

Purpose:
To ensure access to financial services, namely Banking Savings & Deposit Accounts, Remittance, Credit, Insurance, Pension in an affordable manner. 

Key points of the scheme: 

1. Account holders will be provided bank accounts with no minimum balance.

2. RuPay debit cards will be issued.

3. Accidental insurance cover of ₹1 lakh (US$1,500).

4. After six months of opening of the bank account, holders will be eligible for ₹5,000 (US$74) overdraft from the bank.

5. With the introduction of new technology introduced by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), a person can transfer funds, check balance through a normal phone which was earlier limited only to smart phones.

6. Mobile banking for the poor would be available through National Unified USSD Platform (NUUP) for which all banks and mobile companies have come together.

Life Insurance under PMJDY
1. Account holders will be given Rs. 30000 worth insurance coverage. 

2. It also has accidental insurance coverage of over Rs. 2,00,000.

Who can open Jan Dhan account?
An individual who holds an Indian nationality is eligible to open an account under this scheme. A minor who is above 10 years of age is eligible to open the account in any bank under this scheme.

The net balance in the accounts as of March 29, 2017: Rs 62,972.42 crore.

Key point: PMJDY accounts recorded a high of Rs 74,610 crore on December 7, but started declining afterwards.
